In a significant escalation, an Israeli airstrike on Sunday evening targeted Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, resulting in the death of Ismail Barhoum, a senior Hamas official in charge of the group's financial affairs. Barhoum was receiving treatment at the hospital after sustaining injuries in an earlier airstrike just four days prior, according to a Hamas official.
The Israeli military stated that the strike was executed following an "extensive intelligence-gathering process," emphasizing the use of "precise munitions" to limit collateral damage. However, the Hamas-run health ministry reported that numerous individuals, including medical personnel, sustained injuries from the attack.
As of Monday morning, the health ministry indicated that at least 61 fatalities occurred in Gaza due to Israeli actions over the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll since the resumption of hostilities on March 18 to 730.
In a separate incident on Monday near Haifa, a 75-year-old man was killed, and a 20-year-old soldier was injured during what Israeli police classified as a terror attack. The assailant reportedly rammed a vehicle into a bus stop before attacking people with a knife and firearm, ultimately being shot dead by police officers.
Footage verified by RNG247 captured the chaotic scene at Nasser Hospital, where a large section was destroyed and patients were evacuated amid flames and debris.
Israel has accused Hamas of utilizing hospitals as cover for military operations, a claim the group has consistently denied. Additionally, a separate Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis on Sunday resulted in the death of another Hamas figure, Salah al-Bardaweel.
The latest offensive in Gaza follows Israel's decision to end a two-month ceasefire, which was abandoned after Hamas rejected a new U.S. proposal aimed at extending the truce. Tensions between Israel and Hamas have escalated since the deadly attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant civilian casualties and hostages. The ongoing military campaign has reportedly claimed over 50,000 lives in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
